EXPIRED - Healthy School Video Contest - $5000 - Students Only - Under 60 seconds - Due: JANUARY 31, 2008

November 1st, 2007 · No Comments

The school video contest aims to reinforce among SC students the importance of healthy living by challenging them to create healthy TV-type advertisements. The video advertisements will help to increase awareness in South Carolina of the link between the national obesity epidemic and high rates of chronic disease, often the result of poor lifestyle choices.  The ultimate goal of the school video contest is to further educate SC children of the need to live well and to prevent chronic disease.

Eligibility
Any 2007/08 South Carolina student in Middle School or High School may apply. Students must be at least 13 years of age to enter a video in this contest.  Schools can have more than one individual/group enter the video contest.

Video Format
The healthy videos should be in television commercial format- either 30 or 60 seconds in length.  Videos longer than 60 seconds will not be accepted. (Most commercial TV ads are 30 seconds in length). The target audience is all children or adults in SC who are at risk for chronic disease or overweight/obesity (a clear majority of our population).  The video can be staged as a short play, commercial, news broadcast, talk show, music video, animation, documentary, etc.
Video Topics
Videos should be created to address the need for Healthy/Active Living or Chronic Disease Prevention. Students/groups can submit up to two videos total.  Only one person/group can claim responsibility for each video.
Suggested topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
* the importance of good nutrition (eating fruits and vegetables instead of fried foods and snacks)
* why maintaining a healthy body weight is good
* why overweight/obesity is bad
* the importance of getting regular physical exercise
* the perils of smoking
* specific chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke
* the importance of chronic disease prevention
* the link between overweight/obesity and the rise in chronic disease
* what chronic diseases cost us and why we want to avoid them.
