Carbon Cap Metaphor Video Competition - $10,000 - Over 13 y.o. - Under 30 seconds - Due: November 21st, 2008

October 30th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Many scientists, economists, environmentalists and business leaders agree that a cap on carbon emissions is the best way to cure our addiction to oil.  But, quickly and vividly explaining how a cap will solve our energy problems is a challenge.  We need your help conveying this concept to the American people in a clear, brief, convincing and memorable way to stick in the public’s consciousness—like the well-known shot of an egg frying that depicted “your-brain-on-drugs.  We want a video or visual analogy smartly, vividly and clearly explaining how a carbon cap will break America’s addiction to oil.

Don’t focus on global warming—its importance, impact, or the necessity to solve it. We know it’s a critical issue, but that’s not the message of this project. This is about drawing a line between our over-dependence on oil and the cap that will solve it.

Don’t assume people know what carbon pollution is, or where it comes from.  Don’t assume the audiences will understand what a cap is.  Don’t alienate anyone by being partisan. Our goal is explain a concept, not lecture anyone or place blame.

Open to legal residents of the United States ages 13 years and older at time of entry. Submission period ends on 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday November 21, 2008.

A panel of judges comprising members of the Sponsor’s staff and/or consultants will review the Eligible Entries received for theCompetition and select the Winners based on:

  • (a) originality
  • (b) creativity
  • (c) how memorably and clearly, in the judges’ subjective opinion, The Entrant’s Submission explains how capping greenhouse gas pollution will break America’s addiction to oil.

The judges will select one First-Prize Winner from among all Submissions. The First-Prize Winner will receive a check payable to the First-Prize Winner in the amount of U.S. $10,000.

The judges will also select a Second-Prize Winner. The Second-Prize Winner will receive a check payable to that Second-Prize Winner in the amount of U.S. $2,500.

Videos should be no longer than 30 seconds.  Submissions must be posted to a website—for example, your personal site, company site, YouTube, or Flickr.

So has anyone heard back about this yet? I inquired about the contest status 2 weeks ago, and was told by an EDF rep that they were evaluating the finalists and didn’t want to release any information until the contest was finalized. It’s been over a month since the contest ended. I assume the winners have already been contacted, and those of us who lost just won’t hear anything till the press release?

I’d like to know too, Leah. I received the same response from them about a month ago and said they were still deciding but should announce the winner in 2 weeks. Here was my entry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wL5upqz0h4
